Clubbing of the Digits

Definition: Occurs when the angle between nail plate and proximal nail fold is greater than 180 degrees.

 

Important disorders associated with digital clubbing include:

 

Pulmonary Disorders

  • Lung Cancer

  • Pus in the lung (Bronchiectasis, lung abscess, empyema)

  • Pulmonary fibrosis

Cardiac Disorders

  • Cyanotic Congenital Heart diseases (R=>L Shunts)

  • Endocarditis

  • Pericarditis

The lovibond angle > 180 in clubbing ,also called positive schamroths sign . Hippocrates was the first to document it , hence also called the hippocratic fingers :P
