Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbon MEME
"Chimney Sweeps" Carcinoma
Chronic exposure of scotal skin to polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) was historically associated with the development of scrotal squamous cell carcinoma in English chimney sweeps (think Mary Poppin's). This is the first occupational cancer to be recognized and it demonstrated that cancer could be caused by exposure to an environmental carcinogen.
