B = Bowen's layer

C = Stromal layer - Contains fibroblasts denoted by nuclei in the picture

D = Descemet's layer - Location of copper deposition in Wilson's disease Kayser-Fleischer Rings.

E = Endothelial layer - Loss of this layer leads to corneal edema

Fuchs endothelial dystrophy is a degenerative disease of the corneal endothelium which is characterized by:

  • Loss of the endothelial cell layer leading to corneal edema and bullous keratopathy.
  • Development of droplets (Guttata) of abnormal basement membrane produced by the stressed endotheilial cells and deposited adjacent to Descemet's membrane.
