IMG's Wanted!!!
According to a recent article in the New England Journal of Medicine, the need for International Medical Graduates (IMG's) is expected to continue long into the future. Despite the increased numbers of new medical schools, new Osteopathic medical schools, and increased class sizes of existing US medical schools, the number of US graduates will continue to insufficent to fill all of the residency training positions. In 2014-2015 there were 6,846 residency positions filled by IMG's. The article estimates that if current trends hold, in 2023-2024 there will continue to be ~4,500 positions available to be filled by IMG's!!!

IMG Positions |
2014-2015 |
~6,846 |
2023-2024 |
~4,500 |
The data suggests that :
- The need for IMG's will continue long into the foreseeable future.
- The number of positions will slowly decrease over the time frame indicating that the competition for spots will increase.
- US graduates may be displaced by better qualified IMG's.
Please note that if additional spots for residency training are created the gap will widen even more!
